Welcome to the ‘Burley Parish Council’ Website. We are here to represent the village both to the community and to the outside world and and we hope you find the content useful. Our aim is to support and implement local legislation and to carry out task which would not be economic for the larger local authorities and organisations.
Burley Parish Council is made up of six Councillors who are elected every four years, the last election being 2nd May 2019. The Chairperson and Vice -Chairperson are elected annually from our own number. The Parish Council also employs a part time Clerk, who is our Responsible Financial Officer, and a Village Lengthsman who undertakes small maintenance jobs around the village. The Parish Council is consulted on all local planning matters and applications, the Chairperson for our ‘Planning Committee’ is selected from our own number to manage this.
Parish Council meetings are usually held at 18:30 on the second Wednesday of every month in the Myrtle Hall in Copse Road, off Pound Lane and are open to the public. A regular feature of the meeting is ‘Public Participation’ during which members of the public are encouraged to raise any areas of concern, or to contribute to the discussions. An ‘Annual Assembly is held every year, usually in May, to which all members of the public are invited. The Parish Council uses this opportunity to review the last year and discuss any key issues. It is also giving us the opportunity to introduce guest speakers who keep us appraised of developments and local issues.
As the lowest tier of government, Parish Council’s powers are limited but we do what we can within the legal boundaries which have been set. We do however, own and maintain some of the assets around the village, primarily, bus shelters, village notice boards, various bench seats around the village, road signs and the Queens Jubilee Clock and Millennium Stone in the village centre. The Parish Council owns the site of ‘Deer Hall’ behind the Fire Station, which is currently occupied by the ‘Little Deer’s’ pre-school day nursery. We also maintain the ‘War Memorial’ in the village centre and ten milestones in the Parish. The ‘War Memorial and three of the stones are Grade ll listed.
Vision
Burley has a healthy society with a pre-school, a village school, a thriving church, village stores/Post Office, a range of shops and many societies catering for different interest groups. We do all we can to support the village, its environment, businesses and charities as far as our limited budget will allow.
We need to meet the aspirations of the next generation: a vision for a contented, diverse village, proud of its heritage but looking to the future. We need to help make Burley a better place for the next generation with a good demographic balance, with young people to live in affordable houses.
